To address media houses’ financial challenges, the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) organized a coordination meeting with Arezoo Hatakoi, head of United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) regional office in Herat, while a number of media officials and local journalists of this province were also present.
In this meeting, challenges facing media houses and journalists in the western zone of the country, especially financial problems, were discussed.
Shamil Ahmad Mashal, AJSC’s western zone coordinator, expressed concern over media houses low revenue generation and asked UNAMA to financially support local media houses.
Arezoo Hatakoi, head of UNAMA’s regional office in Herat province, referring to this organization’s past support for media, said that she will organize a meeting with various UN organizations and see if they can support local media outlets by broadcasting their educational and promotional programs through these outlets. This will address local media houses’ financial challenges to some extent as well as create job opportunities for unemployed journalists.
