The Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) held an advocacy meeting with Roza Otunbayeva, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Afghanistan and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), and Patricia Mcphillips, head of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Afghanistan on the occasion of May 3 World Press Freedom Day.

In the meeting with UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Matiullah Sarwar, AJSC’s government relations coordinator, in addition to discussing challenges facing journalists and media houses such as media laws and financial issues, called for addressing these challenges.

The head of UNAMA, in addition to appreciating AJSC’s activities, said that she will assist in addressing the said challenges.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 3 May as the ‘World Press Freedom Day,’ in 1993 to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of press freedom, and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

AJSC has been continuously working to facilitate a safe environment for journalists and media workers across the country.
