On the occasion of the International Day for Universal Access to Information, the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) emphasizes the fundamental and vital role of responsible access to accurate and timely information.

Access to accurate and timely information can help reduce or prevent the spread of rumors, misinformation, and disinformation, and can remove ambiguity within society. Furthermore, considering the current situation in Afghanistan, access to information can provide a more accurate picture of the realities on the ground.

As information plays an important role in the lives of citizens, access to credible and timely information plays a crucial role in building a just society and promotes accountable governance.

AJSC highlights the importance of the public’s right to access information in order to build a just, transparent, and accountable society, and calls on all stakeholders to strive toward better access to information for the public.

On the occasion of the International Day for Universal Access to Information, AJSC urges government authorities to establish effective mechanisms for the free flow of information so that process of providing public information is better facilitated.

The International Day for Universal Access to Information was proclaimed on 15 October 2019 at the 74th UN General Assembly.
