About AJSC:
Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) is an independent, nonprofit organization that supports press freedom in Afghanistan and works towards the advancement of journalist safety and rights so that they can report in a safe and fearless environment. AJSC is based in Kabul and maintains a presence in every province of Afghanistan. AJSC’s executive section has official representatives in eight regions of the country and an unofficial focal point in the remaining 26 provinces. This has enabled AJSC to establish representation throughout the country and provide media workers with necessary help when needed. AJSC provides a host of services for journalists, advocates for press freedom and offers emergency assistance for journalists in need. Monitoring, verifying, documenting and reporting threats and violence against journalists is also a key mandate of AJSC. A holistic approach to enhancing press freedom and safety of journalists has been key to AJSC success.
Purpose:
The Gender Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating gender-related activities within AJSC, promoting gender equality, and supporting the professional development and safety of women journalists. The coordinator will work closely with the AJSC Gender manager, media outlets, advocacy groups, and relevant stakeholders to ensure gender-sensitive approaches are integrated across all AJSC’s programs and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage with government bodies, media organizations, and international entities to address gender-specific challenges faced by women journalists.
- Collaborate with women’s advocacy groups and networks to enhance the visibility and representation of women journalists in the media landscape.
- Organize and facilitate meetings and discussions with key stakeholders to advocate for gender equality in media policies and practices.
- Facilitate effective communication and coordination among advocacy groups operating under AJSC to bolster support for women journalists.
- Prepare comprehensive reports on gender-related activities, outlining progress, challenges, and recommendations for improvement.
- Submit weekly and monthly activity reports to the Gender Manager, detailing achievements, ongoing challenges, and actionable recommendations.
- Collaborate with local media organizations, civil society groups, and relevant stakeholders to promote gender equality and enhance the safety of journalists.
- Additional Responsibilities
- Develop and implement training programs for journalists and media organizations focused on gender sensitivity and best practices in reporting.
- Provide mentorship and support to women journalists, helping them navigate challenges in their careers.
- Analyze gender-related data and trends to identify areas for improvement in media representation and safety.
- Contribute to the development of gender-sensitive policies and guidelines for AJSC and partner organizations.
- Engage with community stakeholders to raise awareness of gender issues in journalism and media.
- Organize public events, workshops, and campaigns to promote gender equality and highlight the contributions of women journalists.
- Establish protocols for supporting women journalists in crisis situations, including harassment or violence.
- Collaborate with relevant organizations to ensure resources and support are available for affected journalists.
- Design and implement monitoring and evaluation frameworks to assess the impact of gender initiatives.
- Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Law, BBA, Literature, or a related field from a reputable institution.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience.
- Strong planning, organization, leadership, and project monitoring skills.
- Fluency in English, Dari and Pashto.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
