AJSC Celebrates May 3, World Press Freedom Day

The Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) commemorated May 3, World Press Freedom Day, by organizing an event in Kabul.


The event was attended by Mawlawi Hayatullah Mohajer Farahi, deputy minister of publications at the ministry of information and culture (MoIC), Faridullah Mohammadi, head of Tolo News, Mujeeb-ur Rahman Baheer, head of Ariana News, Khubaib Ghufran, MOIC spokesperson, Abdul Qadir Monsif, head of Pajhwok News Agency, Rohina Hashemi, head of Begum Radio, Mufti Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior (MoI), Ghayoor Waziri, head of Killid Group, Mansoor Nikmal, head of Khaama Press, Sangar Hashemi, head of Yak TV, Maher Ehsanzai, head of publications at Shamshad Radio and Television, along with a number of journalists, media representatives, and representatives of media support organizations.


During the event, discussions focused on the overall state of media work in the country, improving access to information, addressing the economic challenges facing media houses, facilitating capacity building training programs for journalists, and supporting media and journalists.


Mawlawi Hayatullah Mohajer Farahi, deputy minister for publications at the MoIC, expressed appreciation for the work of the media and stated that the government is committed to supporting media houses. He also said that effective measures will be put in place to address the economic challenges of the media.


Hasibullah Fararoon, AJSC programmes manager said that in addition to focusing on creating a safe working environment for journalists, AJSC is working to expand training programs aimed at strengthening journalists’ capacity.


Media managers, during their speeches, emphasized the need to address the challenges facing media outlets, particularly economic issues, improve access to information, and strengthen support for journalists and media organizations.


May 3, World Press Freedom Day, was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 to highlight the fundamental principles of press freedom, encourage governments to support media, assess the state of media freedom, and commemorate journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.


AJSC has been consistently working to address challenges facing the media and facilitate a safe environment for journalists.
