Latest update on the attack on Zohra Radio, a local media outlet in Kunduz province, northern Afghanistan

The attack on Radio Zohra on Friday (January 15, 2021), incited by Mawlawi Abdul Basir, was closely followed up by the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) with local officials.


A team that included AJSC’s representative, prepared a list of Radio’s damaged equipment and the exact amount of damages were determined.


An extraordinary meeting was held today (January 19, 2021), with the presence of the Deputy Governor of Kunduz, media community representatives, Ulema (religious) scholars’ representatives, the Director of Information and Culture, the Editor in Chief of Radio Zohra, and AJSC’s representative for northeast Afghanistan.


In this meeting, Ulema (scholars) in Kunduz province called the attack on Radio Zohra a misunderstanding and misconduct and praised the work of the Kunduz local media community. The participants emphasized that all problems should be investigated in accordance with the law and through legal institutions. After this, if a Mawlawi, do misconduct, he will be held accountable.


AJSC appreciates the efforts of the Kunduz Local Government, the Ulema, and the media community in following the issue, and believes that journalists and the media should be protected.
