Nangarhar, Afghanistan: Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) strongly condemns the assassination of three staff members of the Enikass TV, dubbing department in two separate shootings in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province. AJSC expresses its condolences and grief to the family and friends of these martyrs.

According to the AJSC representative in Nangarhar province, the employees of the dubbing department of Enikass TV were killed today in two separate shootings by unidentified gunmen in the first and fourth districts of Jalalabad city, while they were on their way home from work. This happened while on December 10, 2020, Malala Maiwand, a prominent presenter of Enikass TV, was murdered by unidentified gunmen.

Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) calls on the government to conduct meaningful investigations into these incidents and share the results with the media community.

AJSC has always, and especially in recent months, been actively pursuing murder cases of journalists with the Afghan government. However, the current approach of security agencies towards investigating these incidents and sharing information with the media community is not satisfactory at all—something that needs to be changed.

According to the laws of the country, the Government of Afghanistan has the responsibility to protect the lives, property, and security of all citizens and practical and effective steps must be taken to ensure the safety and security of journalists as civilians.

AJSC believes that if the current trend continues, Afghanistan’s most important achievement, freedom of expression and the independent media, will be vanished. Therefore, serious efforts and pressures to stop the attacks and get the final results and clarify the cases of the murder of journalists must continue. AJSC will not stop following up on these cases.
