The Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) joins the national and international media support and other organizations in commemorating the International Day for Universal Access to Information.

The International Day for Universal Access to Information was proclaimed on 15 October 2019 at the 74th UN General Assembly.

The right to access information is one of the fundamental rights of citizens. As information plays an important role in the lives of citizens, access to accurate and timely information is important for building a just society and promoting participation.

The AJSC emphasizes the significance of the citizens’ right to access to information in creating a just, transparent and accountable society, and calls on all stakeholders to strive to facilitate better access to information to citizens.

On this occasion, the AJSC calls on government authorities to re-establish the Access to Information Commission and to enforce the Access to Information Law of Afghanistan.

The AJSC also considers the recruitment of spokespersons and information officers for government agencies paramount for timely access to information and ensuring accountability of relevant entities’ provision of information.

The AJSC has been continuously working to address challenges facing the media and facilitate a safe environment for journalists.
