AJSC Statement on the Death of Afghan Journalist Torpikai Amarkhil

More than 70 Afghans, including Torpikai Amarkhil, a renowned Afghan journalist, lost their lives following the tragic capsizing of a boat carrying asylum seekers in the coastal waters of southern Italy.


The loss of so many citizens of the country in such a tragic incident has brought great pain and sorrow for us. We mourn this great loss. We consider the death of the experienced journalist Torpikai Amarkhil an irreparable loss for the country’s media community.


AJSC expresses its deep condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families and survivors, especially Ms. Amarkhil’s.


AJSC calls on all stakeholders to do more to ensure journalists and media workers safety and job security. In addition, the AJSC also calls on journalists and media workers to avoid illegal immigration, which carries a high risk of death.
